In 2009, the program received a two-year, $1.8 million grant from The Kresge Foundation for the Building Green at Minority Serving Institutions Initiative. Participation is open to all minority serving institutions.
FIEP will convene three Building Green Learning Institutes in 2010 as part of the grant. The Learning Institutes will benefit facilities directors, planners, business managers and campus sustainability officers as key players in a greener campus infrastructure.
Each institute attracts leaders of infrastructure, building and operations from more than 100 minority serving colleges and universities, along with top green building and sustainability experts.
UNCF is partnering with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, The Thurgood Marshall College Fund, American Indian Higher Education Consortium, and Second Nature Campus Green Builder for this initiative. The goals are to:
- Increase the number of buildings and structures on minority serving institution campuses that register for and achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification
- Add to the number of MSIs that are signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment
- Host and train more than 250 facilities directors, planners, business managers and campus sustainability officers representing public and private historically black, Hispanic-serving and tribal colleges and universities.
