Oakwood has undergone significant transformation in recruitment and retention. President Baker, the EMP program director and a consultant worked to bolster recruitment and retention efforts. Dr. Baker has realigned the university's enrollment and retention offices to sustain gains made while in the program. They increased the number of states, cities and recruitment venues in student recruitment efforts and expanded their target population beyond Seventh Day Adventist schools and churches.
Post-Katrina Grants
For the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund EMP Initiative, EMP provided a one-time, one-year grant to Dillard University and Xavier University for enrollment recovery after Hurricane Katrina. An “Enrollment Preparation, Response and Recovery Plan” was developed as a result and will be shared with the HBCU institutions along the gulf coast and the broader higher education community.
Pilot Programs at Four Schools
EMP pilot program implementation and last dollar scholarship recipients included Clark Atlanta University, Oakwood University, Texas College and Voorhees College.
CHAMPS Pilot Program
Cultivating High Achieving Motivated Professionals and Scholars (CHAMPS) is a partnership between North Carolina State University and EMP. The CHAMPS program exposes students to North Carolina State University graduate school and summer research opportunities.
Black Male Initiative
The goal of this program is to increase the numbers of African American males enrolled at UNCF-member institutions by 30 percent and to successfully retain and graduate these young men. EMP hopes to provide financial awards and technical assistance to UNCF-member institutions to support innovative academic and social support programs, faculty and student undergraduate research and scholarly research.
Webinars, Workshops and White Papers
EMP consultants developed webinar content to support UNCF member institutions. The two workshops; "Providing Quality Customer Service" and "Developing Recruitment and Retention Plans" will be used by the EMP director to facilitate on-line workshops to provide on-going technical assistance to member institutions. A series of white papers are also being developed.
