UNCF launched the Institute for Capacity Building in 2006. Its primary objective is to support strengthening the 39 UNCF member private historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in various areas. The ICB helps HBCUs draw on their foundations of existing institutional strength and potential. Various ICB programs offer four strategies:

  1. Institutional funding such as planning and implementation grants.
  2. Consultative and technical assistance provided by ICB program directors and external experts.
  3. Professional development opportunities for stakeholders.
  4. Communities of practice that provide opportunities for idea exchange and interaction.
